Technology … increases our alienation in artificial worlds

Dima Al Daks

Philosophy or poetry has never opened a space that attracts hundreds of millions of people and attracts their attention as technology does today. It could already overcome linguistic, cultural and religious obstacles, and the pattern of human behavior has transformed it into an object. through addiction to smart digital screens, until it became the common denominator among the majority of children. their original place of existence to immerse them in virtual places that their minds and souls strive for.
Whoever contemplates the conditions of the world will find that the cultural and intellectual arena becomes narrower before philosophical and poetic creations, as if the philosophical discourse and the poetic poem have exhausted their purposes, thus vacating the space for a new discourse of which the stars shines more and more, which is the discourse of technology.
When we listen carefully to Mark Zuckerberg presenting the features of his new project “Metaverse”, we realize that we are at a new turning point in the history of human thought. His talk on existence, presence and the universe suggests that the great questions of existence are no longer an abstract philosophical matter or purely poetic, but rather have become questions that require technological answers Practical technical nature. Zuckerberg says: This new technology will help us to strengthen our sense of presence in other places. By attending elsewhere, we find ourselves confronted with the issue of technology and existence, a question that many have already argued, led by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger.
If the apparent significance of the talk about intensifying the sense of presence in other places suggests that we are facing a new destination that has not been reached before, then the inside of it refers us to a philosophical legacy that is very old is. Zuckerberg and his kind of technology pioneers today seek to achieve this goal, but to embody perceptions of existence, whose owners say the possibility of establishing an ideal world free from the impurities of the given world, souls satiate and long for them to places other than where they are.
To speak of the intensification of presence in other places implies an axiom that says the corruption of the natural place and its narrowness before the being. We do not think that the technology represented by glasses that enable us to communicate with virtual reality and augmented reality can enhance the sense of presence in the tangible place, but rather the human feeling of alienation in this place increase. The truth is that technology does not promise to solve the problem of philosophies that led to the separation of man from the world and the stripping of him of his sense of belonging to nature, but rather this man’s immersion in worlds which by his mental imagination and industrial skill.
Metaverse applications can have many practical benefits that can not be denied or underestimated, such as helping to organize administrative work, study and distance learning, or to enjoy the company of friends and family who separate us from long distances, or to contribute to some games, and other practical applications. However, these applications do not rise to the level of answering questions of meaning associated with human existence; Rather, they remain mere technical innovations like their predecessors, once they control the regulation of people’s relationship with time and place, until the need to transcend it appears.
What is worrying is that technology is no longer just techniques and tools used to move the mill of life, but has become a culture that defines man’s relationship with time and place, and his forms of presence in the natural world dictates. Technology, as embodied in the Metaverse project, suggests that the human mind has transcended the stage of original existence, as man used to live poetry on this earth, as the German poet “Friedrich Hölderlin” says, which a natural life intended based on the feeling of immersion in the given natural existence; Or where a person refuses to thrive within narrow patterns that obscure the view of the vast universe.
The poet does not make doors, because he sees in the door a tool that separates the inside from the outside and deprives the being of a sense of belonging to the universe. In this sense, poetry is an expression of the stage of the sense of presence in the universe.
Technological projects also indicate a transcendence of the stage of philosophy, where man seeks to rationalize the world, that is, to leave the realm of absolute expanse, and then enter the realm of closed narrowness. The philosophical mind decomposes reality into parts, defining the nature of each part according to the logic of the boundaries based on “inclusion / exclusion”, that is, the separation between the inside and the outside, before reassembling these parts into ‘ a purely rational systemic structure. Thus, the title of the stage of philosophy is “To expand the mind about existence.”
The contemplator of today’s technological discourse seems to be over-exhausted from abstract worlds, and to the marketing of types of “programmed existence” until the listener of this discourse has the illusion that technology will sell him a part of his life. The point is that metaphysics and similar technology is not a technology that facilitates human communication with nature and enhances its sense of life in it, as much as it increases its alienation in artificial worlds. In this regard, it is correct to criticize the technological discourse, and to break down the intellectual foundations on which it is based.
