How Galaxy S Series Prices Have Changed Over The Years

It is normal for phones to rise in price, so if you tell a smartphone user that the prices of a series like the Galaxy S have only risen over the years, they will believe you. However, this is not the truth. There have been a few years where prices have really dropped, including 2021, believe it or not. Looking back, we will find many interesting changes taking place in prices. We highlight it here.

Since Samsung is the largest smartphone maker in the world and the Galaxy S series is the most popular family of phones, we thought we would test everything from the beginning by looking back at its history. Below you will find a list of each flagship Galaxy S phone and its original launch price. And you will find a chart that gives a brief overview of how these prices have changed over time.

Please note that we will not include all types of Galaxy S series here. For example, non-essential copies from mid-2010 will not be included. We also ignore Fan Editions, Lite Editions, etc., in favor of focusing only on the main versions in the series.

Galaxy S – $ 399

The original Samsung Galaxy S had many different names. Like Galaxy Proclaim, Galaxy Showcase, Galaxy Vibrant 4G, the list is too long. However, it remains the Galaxy S, which started it all.

The average price of the phone is about $ 399, which is about $ 515 in 2022. It sounds like a bargain compared to today’s smartphones, does not it? But keep in mind that this phone was less advanced – and it was much cheaper to manufacture.

Galaxy S2 – $ 549

The Galaxy S2 was a huge success. It swept the market, all eyes were on the Galaxy S2 in early 2011. Unfortunately, Samsung has caught up with these huge sales and has released several versions with completely different designs and specifications, relying on the Galaxy S2 brand. It was messy, but Samsung fixed that bug with the next phone in the series.

Galaxy S3 – $ 599

Following the success of the Galaxy S2, Samsung entered 2012 as the king of smartphones. Where he outperformed Apple in terms of smartphones in the third quarter of 2011, which was the first time for the Korean company at the time. Not content with this success, Samsung, which is probably one of the most beloved phones of all time, introduced the Galaxy S3.

Despite the big jump in specifications and design, the price of this phone did not jump a big distance from the previous model. In 2012, the Galaxy S3 cost about $ 599, or about $ 734 in 2022. This is one of the smaller increases in Samsung’s long history of pricing for the S-Series.

Galaxy S4 – $ 649

Statistically, the Galaxy S4 is the best-selling Android phone of all time. It has sold 80 million units, and the only other Android phone that has come close is its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. Even the powerful iPhone 5s – launched in the same year – sold only 52 million units.

Again, Samsung has only symbolically increased the price of the phone compared to the Galaxy S3. Of course, the cost was $ 649, which equates to $ 783 in 2022.

Galaxy S5 – $ 649

So far, the prices of the S-series have only risen. In 2014, however, Samsung first introduced the latest Galaxy S at the same price as the previous year, which was $ 649, or $ 771 in 2022.

Although the price has remained the same, many new specifications and features have been introduced with this phone. It included a fingerprint sensor integrated into the home button, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and a 16MP rear camera lens.

Unfortunately, sales of the Galaxy S5 could not come close to sales of the Galaxy S4.

Galaxy S6 – $ 649 – $ 799

Galaxy S6 – $ 649 – $ 799

The Galaxy S6 has been named one of the series’ weakest phones, though it is the third time in a row that the price of the base Galaxy S phone has remained unchanged. But the removal of the microSD card slot, IP rating and the beginning of deleting the idea of a removable battery caused the phone to fail.

For the first time, the manufacturer has also introduced a more premium version of the base S phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was basically the same phone, but slightly larger with curved glass on both sides. Although the device does not offer much more than average, the Edge version costs an additional $ 100 for a total of $ 749, or $ 888 in 2022.

And Samsung did not stop there, because Samsung finally launched the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus for $ 799, or $ 948 today.

It is also noteworthy that Samsung lowered the price of the regular Galaxy S6 to $ 579 shortly after its launch due to low sales. It was the first time this had happened in the middle of the Galaxy S’s life cycle, and it would not be the last.

Galaxy S7 – $ 669 – $ 769

With the sales of the Galaxy S6 series being incredibly disappointing, Samsung had to get it right – and fast. Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge released. Both phones took away what was good with the Galaxy S6, but brought back things that Samsung had neglected the year before. It included a microSD card slot and IP rating. Unfortunately, the removable battery is not back.

Galaxy S8 – $ 749 – $ 849

In 2017, the company acquired wisdom in a number of ways. It eventually gave up with the Edge brand, which apparently simply confused buyers. Instead, it introduced the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. The Plus version was bigger than the basic version, so it cost more, and it made more sense.

The Galaxy S8 series represents a seismic shift in the series’ design. For the first time, the fingerprint sensor has moved to the back of the phone so that the entire front can be displayed (of course with large edges).

It went well with the Galaxy S8 because Samsung did not lower the prices of these phones in the middle of their life cycle.

Galaxy S9 – $ 719 – $ 839

Galaxy S9 – $ 719 – $ 839

If you go back to the series, you will see a lot of similarities between the first versions, as the Galaxy S3, S4 and S5 all have the same basic design elements, but despite that, the design looks a bit different.

Not so with the Galaxy S9. It starts repeating the legacy of previous phones. The biggest change was the movement of the rear fingerprint sensor from the side of the camera downwards. The Galaxy S9 also got a second rear camera, the first time this has happened in an S phone.

Perhaps because of how similar these phones are, Samsung prices dropped slightly and the price of the S9 dropped to $ 719 while the S9 Plus came in at an additional $ 120.

Galaxy S10 – $ 749 – $ 1,299

Galaxy S10 – $ 749 – $ 1,299

By 2019, it’s been four years since Samsung released two flagship devices a year for the Galaxy S series. If a company can make two phones, why not make three? Why not make even four? With the Galaxy S10 series, Samsung has moved away and launched four phones simultaneously.

The major S10 and S10 Plus in the range have remained the same as in the previous two years. New was the launch of a smaller, cheaper model known as the Galaxy S10e, which cost $ 749. Then, on the other end of the spectrum, the Galaxy S10 introduced 5G, and that phone cost $ 1,299.

Galaxy S20 – $ 999 – $ 1,399

Galaxy S20 – $ 999 – $ 1,399

The prices of the Galaxy S10 in 2019 were very diverse. The price of the S10e was $ 749, while the price of the S10 5G was almost double that. But with the Galaxy S20, Samsung chose to forgo the low price, the cheapest Galaxy S20 was $ 999. The Galaxy S20 Plus started at $ 1,199.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra has gone particularly far in terms of price. Starting at $ 1,399, there was a $ 1,599 model with more RAM and storage.

Galaxy S21 – $ 799 – $ 1199

Galaxy S21 - $ 799 - $ 1199
Galaxy S21 – $ 799 – $ 1199

The Galaxy S20 series did not appeal to consumers for Samsung. But in 2021, the company corrected this bug by significantly reducing the access cost of the Galaxy S21 family. And you did not even need to lower the overall quality so much to do so.

The lowest price Galaxy S21 started at $ 799. Buyers at this price got the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, and also provided the buyer with a powerful three-lens rear camera setup, a good amount of RAM and internal storage, and a great new aesthetic design that looked very elegant has.

Galaxy S22 – $ 799 – $ 1199

Galaxy S21 - $ 799 - $ 1199
Galaxy S21 – $ 799 – $ 1199

In 2022, Samsung did not increase or decrease the prices of the latest Galaxy S series. The Galaxy S22 starts at $ 799, the Plus version starts at $ 999, and the Ultra version starts at $ 1,199. Again, every buyer has a phone that fits their budget.
