duration/ One of the responses I received to the article “Letter to Salma” was a reply from the Malaysian poet and translator Ruqaya Hashim.
Coincidentally, we were brought together to be virtual friends, I remember perfectly since I was the one who sent a friendship request on Facebook. Ruqayya does not speak Arabic, and I only speak Arabic, with a few exceptions for short English texts with simple language and uncomplicated structures. This simplicity prompted me to write two texts in English; One of them I published in the book “As if it were half truth”, and the woman who wrote it reviewed it for me at the time, and the other text is a poem about the war I was doing with a group short poems about the war under the title “About War Again” on the Ultrasound website on: 18 May 2021.
The friend, Ruqayya, notices that I write poetry, so she takes the initiative to ask me for poems in English to help me publish them after translating them from English to Malay, but I got no one to some texts for me to translate, so this opportunity was lost, until after more than a year she took the initiative again to ask for my poems Or short stories with a biography accompanied by a personal photo to put in Arabic on her website (Peace Be Upon You Davos) as there is no need, as she said, to translate it, and these texts were published along with her celebration on her website and also on her Facebook page.
There is no doubt that the poet Ruqayya is actually a good friend, but she may be fed up with my article about the reader who calls herself “Salma”. The girlfriend, Ruqayya, describes the situation as immoral. I do not know if she meant my article in response to “Salma” or what Salma wrote or that The whole situation, on both sides, is immoral, so she sends this sharp message and says that what she is for the second time for publication posted on her website has not yet been published. Here is the text of her first message, in which she objects to the article “Letter to Salma”:
Please do not send me this kind of article. I do not want any controversy over your works or anything that others answer.
criticism of your works. It’s very unethical and I do not want this kind of writing on my magazines. Literature articles, reviews yes.
I will take. But do not write polemics and answering others on you. Hope you understand.
Besides, I still have your poems that have not yet been published and do not send me too many of your works.
The poet Ruqayya Hashem’s objections did not stop there. She would rather return to me with a second message this morning (14/7/2022), to object to the texts I sent, claiming that it spins poems, and that she has enough love poems sent by European poets is, and that I should write poems about Palestine. Her message means that she will not publish these poems to me, and this is her second message:
Salam Feras, please do not send me love poems. I expect Palestinian issues from Palestinian poets. I have received many love poems from European poets and that is enough. Please use this platform for Palestine issues. Shukran.
This letter is strange, as if the Palestinian poet should not write love poems, as if he is condemned to write directly about politics and the Palestinian cause, even though I have written and written a lot about this aspect, articles, poems and stories, like me a lot wrote about love. I do not see a final contradiction between the poetry of spinning and the poetry of resistance, or between being in love and resisting at the same time. I write this with the pre-Islamic poet Antarah al-Absi in my mind, who mixed war poetry with spin in two major lines of poetry:
And I reminded you, and the spears are from me, and the eggs of India drip from my blood.
I wanted to kiss the swords because they shone as brightly as your smiling mouth.
This letter again discusses the poet’s mission and function, as well as the legitimacy of the poet’s or writer’s emotional writing under occupation or under the influence of a major issue such as the Palestinian issue with its dimensions open. to the issue of freedom and resistance, and the nature of writing that struggles to achieve justice and the right to self-determination.
Perhaps the poet Ruqayyah Hashem does not know that the most beautiful poetry written by Mahmoud Darwish was emotional, flirtatious poetry that is not directly related to the Palestinian cause. This book contains cultural and mythological dimensions related to the theme of love, and some of these poems contain erotic undertones. Darwish rather claims that he wrote for women, and that the woman in his poems is the woman, without meaning Palestine, as some critics have tried to explain some of Darwish’s lyrical poems. Have you not read what Darwish wrote in the poem “Waiting. ”:
You may have looked in the mirror before you left
of herself, and feel two big pears
she waves her side, sighs and hesitates:
Does anyone deserve my femininity besides me?
And he said in another poem entitled “You did not come” no less beautiful than the previous one, despite what it carries from the soul of the defeated lover who is under the influence of women, so he waits for her without her coming, but rather stays busy with her, in mind, poetry and geography:
There is no secret in my body before the night except
What I was waiting for and what I lost …
I laughed at my obsession with clearing the air for her
Perfumed with rose water and lemon spray
And many others, the Palestinian writer is a person who loves and grows tall when he finds a woman who loves him, and is also defeated in love, and lives an individual tragedy like all defeated lovers, and women love and chase , a taste. to live out a stormy love story with all its pleasure, lust and pleasure in bed with the one he loves. Darwish was not the only one to do so. Ghassan Kanafani, this martyr writer known for his full integration with the Palestinian cause and political concern, had a love experience with the writer Ghada Al-Samman, so he told her wrote letters that cleansed. with desire, lust, madness and erotic lust. All lovers have, poets, philosophers and ordinary people. It is a strange logic for the writer to be closed to his political concern to be confined to it.
From another angle, writing love poems for the resistance poet is a kind of resistance, far from artificial philosophy. People should practice this aspect of their lives as a normal practice. They must love, get married, have children, sing songs of joy, weddings, school and university success celebrations, job promotions, birthdays and Valentine’s Day celebrations. By practicing all these rituals, they nurture the sense of real life, and indeed “on this earth that is worth living.” In this is incitement for the occupiers, who bother us to rejoice, and to wrestle with love as we struggle with a gun, it makes no difference; They both fall into the same destination, which is the ability to live and take root in the earth and to belong to it, for it is our land, outer and inner, land, sea, sky, moon, sun and clouds.
I do not want to carry the messages of friend Ruqayya Hashem more than she can bear, but it is very useful for the world’s poets to know what we write about love poems, and we also want them to know us while we write about Palestine, about the revolutionaries, and about the martyrs and prisoners, because we are our people in our country. What we do, we have the first voice of life, our roots are deep in history, and we have many legends, stories and tales. Just as we have our human experiences like others, love poems are not only the right of European poets, we also have our loved ones waiting every morning for ghazal poems to feel the importance of their presence on this land that freedom, deserve love, beauty and liberation, the world must see us and we love and worship women as we see them. We resist and rebel against the occupiers; Enemies of mankind, freedom and life.
Finally, the poet Ruqayya Hashem will also say that I am immoral, as she wrote this time about her letters; Similar to the letter you wrote to the reader “Salma”?
