The movie “Kira Waljen” was shown in cinemas at the end of last June. The film was adapted into the novel “Ahmed Murad”, under the title 1919. The film comes with the same screenplay and dialogue by “Murad” and directed by “Marwan Hamed” .
The Egyptian Revolution of 1919 broke out across the country against the British occupation of Egypt and Sudan, and involved Egyptians and Sudanese from different walks of life following British orders to overthrow revolutionary leader Saad Zagloul and other members of the Wafd Party. 1919 to ban. The British Army. authority controlled the policies of the Egyptian government. Farmers were forcibly called upon to serve the British army as laborers in its campaign to conquer Syria and Palestine from the Ottoman Empire. Many were sent to serve on the Western Front in Europe. By the end of the war, more than one and a half million men were digging trenches, laying pipes, and building railroads. The occupation seized animals and fodder, and families suffered endless famine. Martial law prohibited public meetings and gatherings of more than five. The revolution led to Britain’s recognition of Egypt’s independence in 1922, and the implementation of a new constitution in 1923. However, Britain refused to recognize full Egyptian sovereignty over Sudan, or to withdraw its powers from the Suez Canal. , factors that kept pressing. Anglo-Egyptian relations in the decades preceding the Egyptian Revolution of 1952.
Ahmed Murad’s literature
We need to start the story where Murad’s literature itself comes from. What Murad writes is categorized under the “Pop Art” category, known as light entertaining novels, and that does not mean that you lack the element of interest in their content. In fact, the issue of depth and entertainment is a topic of long debate. It is not right that a serious novel lacks an element of pleasure, and pop art literature should not be subject to elaboration in its details. Either way, you are a narrator: a storyteller. You have to give me something important, touching and interesting, that’s what we learned from the grandmothers’ stories.
The problem is that some readers “Murad” evaluates himself in comparison to novels that do not fall under the same classification as he writes, even he and his fans mistakenly subject themselves to the same competition, such as comparing him to Bahaa Taher, because for example , and then resented that “Murad” in comparison is not a good writer. This problem was raised when one of his novels was nominated for the Arabian Poker Race, about which we know his choices for a different genre of literature than Murad.
This was an important introduction before we started talking about the same problem in the movie “Kira Waljen”. The film is subject to a popular movie rating for Eid cinema viewers, part of the day’s outing, fight scenes, play on patriotic sentiments, love stories, touching nostalgia and men’s friendship.
Heroes without foundation and scenario loopholes
The “jinn” wakes up one day and finds his father – who has never denied his indiscretion – killed in cold blood by an English general. He is in revolt. He decides to take revenge with the same carelessness that suits his personality. In a few days the boy turns into a person with that responsibility who carries his soul on his shoulder, then falls in love and in a few days decides to give up all his addictions, as if the script apologizes as the time allowed for him in the tight movie does not allow for the development of a character deeper than that.
The scenario depicts the “group” resistance from different classes and social backgrounds, the son of the rich, the middle-class doctor, the Coptic and the Egyptian Jew. A patriotic mix that stimulates the sense of patriotism we talked about earlier, within fights that grab the audience’s attention and whistle them like bully movies.
Even the character of the traitor in the movie, to which, if we assume that all his weaknesses, and that self-defeat can take place in a moment without justifications or internal battles, is even referred to from afar. No foundation, no roots, no gesture, even the late justification seemed so sawed off.
A message arrives at the prisoner, a member of the resistance, pulling his buttons, and he swallows it as soon as he feels someone has entered the cell, a few seconds before his decision to betray, in a slender, unjustified arrangement for the viewer, who tries to please the screenwriter with twists.
So too “Murad” in the sign of his characters, so the character of the English detective came as a copy of “Holmes”, which smells blood and analyzes evidence using documents and archives, and then ends up using bullies and hot elders and temptation with money to get the information he wants.
As for the gaps in time, without counting, the years go by just a sentence written on the screen, you do not know how the heroes have surpassed all the time while being chased, and the enemy already has everything learned what he wants about their names and works, how the hero sits in the bar and spends his day as agreed, and his photos I filled the walls of the guard, and how the others traveled outside the country under the same circumstances, do not ask, you are here to receive what we give you, the explanation is difficult and illogical, swallow it and enough.
We do not miss the director’s choice of heroes, which we can say that he managed to choose “Karim Abdel Aziz” and “Hend Sabry”, characters with histories that match their backgrounds. The hero, torn between his hidden personality who apparently favors the English while leading the popular resistance team, “Kira” is divided between what he teaches his son about the hostility of the occupier, and she has to put him in learn a wonderful scene. how to live an English soldier for fear of the child’s life.
“Hind Sabri” appears in the Coptic image of “Dawlat Fahmy”, the heroine of the Upper Egyptian resistance, in a well-drawn image that does not disappoint, her understanding heart for her brother’s tragedy without harsh judgment, her careful steps to love.
As for the character of “Ezz”, it was the great failure of the screenplay and direction. You do not see “Abdul Qader Al-Jin”. Here you watch “Ahmed Ezz” himself, with his recurring character in most of his films, the attractive young man attracted to women, jokingly and clearly harassing, which brings the audience’s laugh, and then tries to seduce his beloved impress and tell him about his childhood heroism by pretending to be a Broadway actor with speeches that do not fit the context of the story.
The real problem is the weakness of character «to serve» And its importance in the text as a contradictory equivalent to the polite and healthy hero, so the scenes of the “jinn” multiplied and filled to the hero, his owner, the partner of stardom, and the scenes of their differences satisfied, even repeated without reasonable justifications to argue a little and then end up in the arms of friends, the world is treacherous enough, so let’s give the audience hope in the principles of loyalty.
Music as a weak point
There is no dispute about the ability of the Egyptian musician “Hisham Nazih” to be distinguished by musical tracks that would have achieved their epic fate if it were not for their excessive use, and their height at certain moments as if it emphasized the viewer to be touched at that particular moment, or to warn him to change what is coming that he does not expect, the film completely directs the viewer to what He must understand and feel it, and so the music unfortunately did too.
As a viewer – not even a specialist – you can see that the film, with its flaws, was tasty in its first third, until the moment came to end the heroes’ journeys, or to close the open stories, ” Murad “spoiled the original. medium-quality dish, supported by the speed of pace in the first third we mentioned.
Not to mention that with a final look, you will find that the film consists of successive scenes of the guerrilla operations, in the middle of which are the lives of the heroes and some dramatic and human stories, then we return to the next guerrilla operation, and excerpts from the 1919 revolution. The film does not tell us about the impact of all these efforts in the revolution, which is the extent of their contribution, but about the anger of the occupier. to provoke and his exhausting search for the transgressors, as if they were matches of mutual revenge, without a plan. “The Jinn” meets his friend “Kira” In an attempt to bring him back to the ranks of the resistance, he tells him that the occupation targeted and killed farmers in a village, thus convincing him to return, as if the resistance was trying to avenge, head to head .
The heroes were excited and promised that their goal was to get the occupier out of the country. left after many years.
national council shortened
The main theme of the film or the purposes of its owners is played by considering the film as a national painting that tells the 19th revolution, but the painting was very reductive, the scenes documented nothing but a few battles, costumes , decorations, and already famous historical events, which appeared for minutes with short short sentences describing it. Everything the viewer will get from the film goes no further than “Es at one time there was a revolution and resistance, heroes and evil English.”
