The past decade has been a period of change in the global arena of the automotive industry. Recognized market leaders have always been displaced by new players from developing countries, but recently this phenomenon has reached global proportions. An increase in market share can be seen with South Korean-made cars that were previously wholly owned by Japanese products. Today, the Koreans have gradually risen above the level of “budget” cars, leaving this niche exclusively to manufacturers from China. Japanese-made cars are still the main competitor of the car giant Hyundai. The comparison aims to introduce people to two competitive models that are shiny and in high demand in the local and global market.
The manufacturer’s concept in the form of “flowing lines” is perfectly reflected in the design of the sedan. Strict angles are smoothed with precision and elegance by using smooth, light rounds. It should be noted that this did not affect the overall impression of the front of the car. The car is beautiful, serious and practical. Conical headlights extend far into the front mudguards, and the muscles of the bonnet successfully emphasize the complex shape of the headlights. The overhead grille is a solution that focuses more on decor than functionality. The chrome font and the large logo are the main elements of this body part.
The lower grille with longitudinal stripes and transparent “boosters” of the fog lights decorated with chrome visually pulls the massive bumper forward.
The side of the car immediately draws attention with the broad seal line of the wheel arches. A cattle bar in the door handle area runs from the rear optics to the front, adding more sobriety to the design of the soft side profile. The soft lines of the glass area, the highly aesthetic side mirrors and the flashing lights blend harmoniously with the exterior. The back of the model looks solid and beautiful. Narrow and high stoplights give the impression of a strict and solid. The tailgate that hangs above the rear optics makes the car look rich and respectful.
The profile was classic, without pretentious and controversial decisions. The roof of the car does not tend to fall backwards. The side glass area is a little closer to the back, and the wide black pillars in the middle look beautiful. The sideline is clearly visible in the area of the front door handles.
Choosing the eventual winner at this point in the comparison was no easy task. Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla are universal products that manufacturers have been betting heavily on in the fight for the consumer, so both cars look in very good condition.
Smooth lines continued the outlines of the body in the design of the interior of the car. Black became the predominant color, while the main design touches were emphasized by silver. The interior of the car is dominated by hard plastic with small chips of soft paint, but its texture does not make the interior cheaper.
The main element of the dashboard is the center console, which has received a large rectangular screen from the multimedia system. Above is a thin strip with a monochrome display of an electronic watch. On the left and right there are vertical central air ducts. The pushbuttons around the system screen are softened by a circular middle knob that protrudes from the crowd with a chrome rim.
The next element is deep and wide cup holders. It is located in the length and has thin chrome wires along the perimeter. The high middle armrest with wide cushion has been proven to be very comfortable and does its job well.
The door cards themselves were made very interesting. Smooth lines, successfully highlighted by silver plastic, soften the black interior perfectly.
The seats are comfortable and have a wide range of aircraft modifications available. The finishing material of the chairs is of good quality, the seams and stitches are neat and not too noticeable. Seat filling, like the systems, provides comfort.
The steering wheel has an interesting shape. The steering wheel is four-spoke, but it is very attractive from an aesthetic point of view. Each speaker contains rows of function buttons for interacting with multimedia and communication systems. The chrome-plated inserts on the inside of the spokes make the steering wheel look light. The edge is medium thick and covered with good material. The steering wheel is completely self-assured in the hands, and the radius and rim are well matched. The steering column can be adjusted for reach and tilt.
The interior of the car can be called modest, technological and somewhat non-standard at the same time. The main material is hard plastic with softening inserts, as well as a mixture of textile material with leather. The side reflectors are rectangular in shape with a beveled edge. The edges of the lower part of these elements are chrome strips.
The first thing you notice right away is the “transparent” center panel. The torpedo is similar to those solutions widely used in premium cars in the early 1990s, only the material differs.
Underneath the deflectors is a large lacquered insert that is visually separated from the top portion of the instrument panel by a chrome strip. It has a multimedia system with a reasonably adequate screen. Left and right there are vertical rows of knots at the bottom, and on top there are small round handles that have received silver rings.
The air conditioning control unit has a dedicated space under the multimedia system, which hangs above the relatively small panel. The climate control system has a narrow monochrome screen at the top, large circular buttons at the sides, and function keys fill the remaining space.
The seats are of medium stiffness, the swivel support is well executed. The seat material is both visually and tactilely pleasing, which promises an adequate level of durability. Adjustment that is accessible at all levels allows you to get a comfortable fit almost instantly.
The steering wheel is light, triangular and has a small diameter. It has an edge of medium thickness, covered with high quality material. The multifunction steering wheel has very comfortable soft control buttons on the horizontal speakers. The vertical speaker has a wide silver insert at the bottom.
The dashboard is protected by a small vision, with a large speedometer on the right, a tachometer on the left, a large rectangle of the main indicators and a trip computer in the middle. The information is completely readable, and the large toolbars are another advantage. Lighting of devices and switches is made in blue and white colors.
Both cars have a high-quality interior. This applies to materials, composition and design.
The winner at this stage is Toyota Corolla. There are several reasons for this decision. The first is that the finishing material for this sedan is very little, but it is better, especially compared to the competitor. The second reason is the “freedom” that the tight central panel gives. And the third is precisely the “classic” novelty in design, which is an original solution for a modern car.
Management performance – engine:
It got an independent design at the front, based on a McPherson-type suspension. The rear suspension is of a semi-dependent type. It consists of a torsion bar with coil springs and a stabilizer.
The car’s engine power is adequate, but active driving is unpredictable. Good traction at medium revs allows you to accelerate well in the allowable speed mode. The lack of power can be felt when you pass on the highway and there are many passengers in the cabin. The 6-speed Shiftronic box attempts to keep the engine in normal operation in a crisp medium.
The engine compartment is well insulated, and the engine can only be heard clearly when the rev counter needle rises to maximum torque.
The braking mechanism is well executed and the disc brakes on all wheels allow for some roughness. ABS is sometimes required to start early, but such cases are rare.
It has an independent MacPherson strut front, and is equipped with an anti-roll bar. The rear suspension is semi-supported, with a reliable torsion bar.
Power unit The family car accelerates well from a standstill and moves aggressively to the highest torque. The 7-speed CVT changer allows you to achieve good dynamics at the start. You should not count on strong overtaking in orbit mode, but the engine allows your dynamic acceleration.
The energy density of the Corolla suspension is high, which has always distinguished the cars of this brand. Also noteworthy is the fact that there is no noticeable noise when the suspension works on bumps of medium depth. The sound insulation of the wheel arches is grade C, but the engine compartment has a good level of insulation.
The car represents the right balance between comfort and active driving and the car’s responses to the steering wheel are fairly clear, but softened by small laps during sharp maneuvers.
At allowable speed you should not be afraid to drive along the axles, the car keeps the road well.
The brakes are very good for a city sedan. Disc mechanisms on all wheels are capable of providing even and confident deceleration. Electronic assistance systems keep the car in a straight line.
Comparison of cars on the road determined the victory of the Toyota Corolla Sedan. The car handles slightly better than its rival Hyundai Elantra. The “Japanese” suspension works much quieter and more comfortable. A more powerful propulsion system could become the Korean model, but practical testing did not reveal this feature. It was a well-deserved victory for the Toyota Corolla.
The boot has an acceptable height and width of the boot, and also has a good amount of space. Bags and boxes will not be a big problem. The most important thing is not to block the cabin to the top, because the trunk lid has hinges.
Feel completely free in the front row. Nothing stands in the way of the driver and passenger’s knees, and even with a small margin, space in width and height is saved. Ergonomics in the cabin is also satisfactory, everything is at hand and it is convenient to deal with the elements.
The two cars are on the same level in terms of space and luggage space. The difference is small, but it’s still there. There is a feeling that the Hyundai Elantra is a bit more spacious than its rival Toyota Corolla. Those extra millimeters ensured the car’s victory at this point in the comparison.
