The earthquake in the city of Dahab, which occurred yesterday, Thursday, which occurred at 18:00 local time, with a magnitude of 3.3, raised questions: Has Egypt turned into an earthquake zone? This was answered by a report issued by the National Institute for Astronomical Research.

The National Institute for Astronomical Research report said, “Earthquakes are considered a violent natural phenomenon, and one of the natural disasters that cannot be prevented, but its risks and harmful effects on people can be mitigated. These vibrations may not be large, and they can be very destructive.

Egypt outside the earthquake belts:

The report emphasizes that “Egypt lies outside the earthquake belts, but it is periodically exposed to some medium-strength earthquakes, especially earthquakes whose center is located in the eastern Mediterranean region and the Red Sea, which is considered one of the most active seismic areas, and seismic activity is recurrent.

The report of the National Institute for Astronomical Research said: “The Earth is exposed to nearly one million earthquakes annually, of which we feel only 10%, as some of them cause destruction and loss of life. Its records ranged between 8 and 9 ,1 on the Richter scale, the majority of which were in Indonesia, and Asia – especially in the Pacific – hit the most earthquake areas during that period.

At the local level, on the twelfth of October 1992, Egypt was hit by a moderate earthquake – a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale, which killed approximately (370) people and injured more than 3,000 others. Its epicenter was southwest of Cairo in the Dahshur region, near Fayoum and Giza.

The report revealed that the policy to face the risks of earthquakes in Egypt, and the possible ways to mitigate its consequences, are in various stages (preparation – confrontation – recovery and lessons learned), and it is one of the most active seismic areas, and the level of seismic activity in it is average and above average. It directly affects the cities of the North Coast, Alexandria, Rashid and Damietta, and reaches parts of the Delta and the Nile River.

Regarding the earthquakes to which Egypt was subjected, the first of which was the 1955 earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8, which was felt by the entire population of Egypt and limited destruction in the cities of Alexandria, Beheira and some areas of the Delta caused, and led to the death of 22 people. The level of seismic activity is average and above average, and it is characterized by high frequency.

The report indicated that earthquakes in this region hit the governorates of the Canal, the Red Sea, South Sinai and the surrounding areas of the Gulf, and Cairo and the Delta, in the Gulf of Aqaba, and Jordan, Egypt, Palestine and shook Saudi. Arabia, and caused partial destruction in some moorings of Nuweiba port and a hotel, and caused cracks in some buildings and roads. It also caused cracks in the surrounding mountainous areas, Dahshur (southwest of Cairo), with moderate seismic activity . It is located 35 km southwest of Cairo, and includes the Fayoum area and Lake Qarun.

As for the 1992 earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8, which was felt by the entire population of Egypt, killing 370 people and injuring more than 3000. It was located 35 km northeast of Cairo and included the area of Khanka and Abu Zaabal. As for the earthquake of 1999, it was 4.8 Richter, and it was felt by the inhabitants of Cairo, the Delta and the Canal cities, and there were no losses.

The Astronomical Research Institute explained that the earthquake reservoirs in southern Egypt are relatively less than in the north. It is affected by a group of scattered earthquake foci along the Nile Valley in the south.

As for the 1981 earthquake in the Kalabsha region, with a magnitude of 5.6, and it was felt by the inhabitants of Aswan as far as Assiut, it led to large cracks in the rocks of the western bank of the Lake Nasser, and landslides in the rocks of the eastern shore of the lake.
