Committed to promoting positive sustainability approaches and practices in various aspects of its work, and in support of efforts to address the environmental challenges we face, Umniah has launched its sustainability programme, which deals with environmental, social and corporate governance practices, through which it seeks to spread awareness about this crucial issue and integrate, encourage and reward its subscribers until Be an active part of the change towards a better tomorrow.

Shatara explained Umniah’s commitment to the standard set by the International Telecommunication Union, which requires the ICT industry to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% from 2020 to 2030, as the company audited and inventory of greenhouse gases (GHG). its facilities for the past three years (2019, 2020 and 2021), which included inventories of greenhouse gas emissions from network services, its headquarters, data center and company-owned retail stores.
Shatara indicated that Umniah continues to align its sustainability strategies, plans and programs with the vision of economic modernization and its goals and objectives recently launched by the government, as the sustainability program is one of the three pillars of the economic modernization vision.
Speaking about Umniah’s efforts in the area of environmental practices and its awareness and awareness of the impact of energy management processes and greenhouse gas emissions, Shatara pointed to the three pillars of Umniah’s sustainability approach, which are environmental, social practices and corporate governance.
On the environmental front, in 2019 Umniah inaugurated solar farms in Mafraq, Al Dulail, Hallabat and Azraq. The goals of this project are in line with the Kingdom’s plans to shift to clean energy, as it reduces the emission of greenhouse gases due to burning gas or oil. Solar energy is about 20 gigawatts, which is the balance of about 11.5 kilotons allowed carbon dioxide, and this project also provided Umniah with the equivalent of 50% of its electrical energy needs.
Shatara confirmed that in 2021, thanks to various initiatives and projects it had previously launched, Umniah was able to increase dependence on renewable energy by 70% (compared to the previous year). ) and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (carbon). The company will also, within a well-thought-out strategy, work to implement more initiatives in the coming months, through which Umniah expresses its national duty to support Jordan’s implementation of its commitments to international forums and institutions related to the environment.
On a social level, Shatara indicated that Umniah plays an active role in creating a positive social impact that contributes to social and economic development in local communities throughout the Kingdom, and this is evidenced by the company’s adoption of a pioneering and innovative social responsibility strategy, through which it seeks to support people. Ideas and projects with high added value in many sectors, especially; Education, sports, culture, art and others, not to mention its important and vital role in supporting entrepreneurs and start-up owners through its incubator for entrepreneurship, The Tank.
In terms of effective management and strong risk management, Shatara stated that Umniah focuses on adopting, implementing and reviewing the right policies and procedures to ensure the practice of good corporate governance in terms of transparency, accountability, flexibility and compliance with all regulations and laws. and in line with the objectives of the sustainability program.
The CEO of Umniah’s commercial division, Zaid Al-Ibrahim, reviewed the reasons that prompted Umniah to be part of the local and international efforts to reduce and reduce heat emissions and contribute to as much as possible from climate change on our soften the world.
Al-Ibrahim pointed to the increase in the number of people connected to the Internet, the increase in data traffic and the demand for data centers, in addition to an increase in the employment of energy-intensive information and communication technology equipment and the demand for digital services , which can lead to an increase in emissions and therefore negatively affect the environment in the long term. This requires that the necessary actions be taken by companies to reduce the impact of these emissions. He explained that Jordanians’ interest in environmental issues and the dangers of global warming has begun to increase in recent months.
Ibrahim pointed to the role of telecommunication companies in various countries of the world to play an active role in supporting sustainability, stressing that Umniah will be a local and regional leader in achieving sustainability, especially in the ICT sector due to the adoption of environmentally friendly solutions. and initiatives that are more rational in energy consumption, in addition to its role in Contribute to spread awareness about this crucial issue and encourage its employees and subscribers to actively participate in this initiative.
Al-Ibrahim indicated that Umniah will develop a carbon emission calculator using the latest tools and protocols so that network subscribers can know and measure their carbon emissions and realize their responsibility towards climate change, in addition to offering a set of rewards and ways for the subscribers to take steps to contribute to the protection of the environment.
