Astronomy reveals the fact that the Earth’s rotation is accelerating

Astronomers have confirmed that on June 29, 2022, the Earth recorded its shortest day since atomic clocks were used to measure the speed of its rotation on its axis, as it completed one revolution in less than 24 hours (1.59 milliseconds), which is the shortest day since 2020.

Scientists have reported that it is practically not disturbing to people and does not affect their daily life. It is known that the Earth’s rotation on its axis varies slightly all the time due to changes in atmospheric pressure, winds, ocean currents and the movement of our planet’s core, but it is not appropriate for international timekeepers who use ultra-accurate atomic clocks to measure timing The world in which each person sets his clock.

When the sidereal time defined by the time it takes the Earth to complete one revolution on its axis deviates from UTC by more than 0.4 seconds, the UTC is adjusted.

He emphasized that the Earth rotates on its axis once every (86,400 seconds) or 24 hours, which is used to measure the length of the day, but this happens over long periods of time, that the rotation slows down or speeds up so that time to complete one revolution rises up or down by a fraction of a millisecond.

In recent years, scientists added, the Earth’s rotation on its axis has accelerated. In 2020, the shortest 28 days were recorded since accurate daily measurements using atomic clocks began in the 1960s, but people did not feel it, and the Earth continued to rotate rapidly on its axis in 2021, although the shortest day of the year in 2021 was longer than in 2020 and people did not feel it.

During this year 2022, the Earth’s rotation around its axis accelerated again, as it was recorded on June 29, the shortest day since the beginning of the atomic clock, as it reached – 1.59 milliseconds, and no one felt any change in contrary to what is promoted on social media pages.

The astronomers indicated that the recent accelerations in the Earth’s rotation around her as the idea of a leap second negative or (elimination of a second), rather than adding a second, this is because the average length of ‘ A day is 86,400 seconds, but a sidereal day in 2022 will take a shorter period than 86,400 seconds, and over the course of a year it will add a delay in atomic time.

So it is very likely that a (one second omission) will be needed if the rate of Earth’s rotation on its axis increases further, but it is too early to say whether this is likely to happen.

Leap seconds have their advantages and disadvantages, they are useful for making sure that astronomical observations are synchronized with clock time, but they can be a problem for some data recording applications and communication infrastructure, so some scientists at the International Telecommunication union suggested that the gap be left. between astronomical and atomic time widens until there is a need for the addition of a “jump clock”, which reduces communication disruption, and if that happens, astronomers will have to make their own adjustments in time.

Historically, time was based on the Earth’s rotation on its axis with respect to celestial bodies, but with the invention of atomic clocks, time became more accurate.
