Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the national railway network in the United Arab Emirates, has achieved a major new achievement in the development of the national railway network, represented by the arrival of the first batches of locomotives and wagons of the company’s new and advanced fleet to the country through the ports of “Zayed” and “Mussafah”.’, which upon completion will run on the entire UAE national rail network.

The announcement of this achievement came during a ceremony to unveil the new fleet organized by the company in Al Mirfa City in the western region of Abu Dhabi, in the presence of His Excellency Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, together with Marty Haycraft, President. and CEO of Progress Rail, and Henry Bang, CEO of CRRC Group in the Middle East, in addition to a number of officials from all parties.

This achievement is in line with the company’s efforts to achieve the goals of the “National Railway Programme”, the largest system of its kind for road transport at the state level, and falls under the umbrella of the 50 projects, the largest package of national strategic projects that seek to establish a new phase of internal and external growth for the country. For the next fifty years, it aims to draw a new road map in the UAE to transport goods and passengers on board trains, which will contribute to the development of a sustainable road transport system connecting the different cities of the country via railways.

The first batches of the fleet have arrived in the country through the ports of Zayed and Mussafah, and this move comes within the framework of Etihad Rail’s plans to expand its fleet of trains to serve the entire network upon completion, as the company ‘s fleet of locomotives increased. up to 45 locomotives for heavy transport, equivalent to 6 times the fleet. The fleet of “Etihad Train” is specifically designed to withstand the geographical nature, climatic conditions, temperatures and high humidity in the GCC region, to ensure high levels of performance, efficiency and sustainability.

The fleet will contribute to strengthening the transport and logistics system in the UAE and consolidating its position on the regional and global logistics map, as it will increase the capacity of the UAE national rail network to transport more than 60 million tonnes of goods to be achieved annually. Each of the new diesel-electric locomotives in the fleet, the Electro-Motive Diesel EMD® SD70, features 4,600 horsepower, one of the most powerful engines in the region, and is equipped with the latest filtration innovations, such as the pulse filtration system and the sand filtration system, which ensures The train is highly efficient and effective when passing through desert areas, in addition to the latest technology to reduce emissions.

It is equipped with advanced technologies and systems such as the most advanced ETCS Level 2, to ensure safety, security and reliability as well as efficiency and sustainability.

Each locomotive can pull 100 wagons, equivalent to a load of 300 trucks, and the volume of goods transported by trains is equivalent to 5600 truck trips per day.

Cars for various uses

The vehicles will be equipped with the latest braking, signaling, control, communication and safety systems. Diversity in vehicle types will provide greater flexibility and high capacity to transport different sizes of goods, such as the transport of bulk cargo containers such as petrochemicals, crude steel and its products, limestone, cement, building materials, industrial and domestic waste, aluminum, food commodities, and general cargo, in addition to the frequency of the schedule in transport. Which will contribute to reducing the cost of shipping by 30% and increasing the efficiency of logistics operations for customers and network users to become more commercially successful. In addition, rail transport will contribute to the reduction of truck congestion on the roads, which is currently the only means of transport.
