Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the national railway network, has achieved a major new achievement in the development of the national railway network, represented by the arrival of the first batches of locomotives and wagons from the company’s new and advanced fleet into the country by the ports of “Zayed” and “Musaffah”. The entire UAE national rail network, when completed.
The announcement of this achievement came during a ceremony to unveil the new fleet organized by the company in Al Mirfa city in the western region of Abu Dhabi, in the presence of Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, together with Marty Haycraft, President and CEO. of Progress Rail, and Henry Bang, President Executive Director of CRRC Group in the Middle East, in addition to a number of officials from all parties.
This achievement is in line with the company’s efforts to achieve the goals of the “National Railway Programme”, the largest system of its kind for road transport at the state level, and falls under the umbrella of the 50 projects, the largest package of national strategic projects that seek to establish a new phase of internal and external growth for the country. For the next fifty years, it aims to draw a new road map in the UAE to transport goods and passengers on board trains, which will contribute to the development of a sustainable road transport system connecting the different cities of the country via railways.
The first batches of the fleet have arrived in the country through the ports of Zayed and Mussafah, and this move comes within the framework of Etihad Rail’s plans to expand its fleet of trains to serve the entire network upon completion, as the company ‘s fleet of locomotives increased. up to 45 locomotives for heavy transport, equivalent to 6 times the fleet. The stream consists of 7 locomotives. Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company of America and one of the world’s largest manufacturers of diesel and electric locomotives, manufactures and supplies the new EMD® SD70 electromotive diesel locomotives.
While the size of the company’s fleet of vehicles has increased to more than 1,000 multiple vehicles, equivalent to 3 times the current fleet of 240 vehicles. China’s CRRC Group, one of the world’s leading providers of solutions for the sustainable development of the railway industry, manufactures and supplies the fleet with new vehicles.
In this regard, Mohamed Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of Railway Affairs at Etihad Rail, said: The arrival of the new fleet of locomotives and wagons to the country’s territory according to the specified schedule reflects the magnitude of the achievements that the “Etihad Rail”- project continues to achieve in terms of the development of the entire railway network. The UAE National, which upon completion and full operation will contribute to the promotion and advancement of the economic growth of the country, especially during the next fifty years, by providing reliable and safe cargo services and transportation of goods with high efficiency at the state level and at the regional level when connected with the GCC network, which is what It will consolidate the UAE’s position as a global and regional hub for cargo and logistics.
The Etihad rail fleet is highly sustainable
The fleet of “Etihad Train” is designed to withstand the geographical nature, climatic conditions, temperatures and high humidity in the GCC region, to ensure high levels of performance, efficiency and sustainability.
The company’s new fleet will contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the country, as the carbon emissions resulting from transport by train are 70 to 80% less than the carbon emissions generated by trucks transporting the same amount. Each of the new fleet of diesel and electric locomotives, Electro-Motive Diesel EMD® SD70, has a power of 4,600 horsepower, considered one of the most powerful engines in the region, and is equipped with the latest filtration innovations , such as the pulse filtration system and the sand filtration system. It is equipped with advanced technologies and systems such as the most advanced ETCS Level 2, to ensure safety, security and reliability, as well as efficiency and sustainability.
Each locomotive can pull 100 wagons, equivalent to a load of 300 trucks, and the volume of goods transported by trains is equivalent to 5600 truck trips per day.
The vehicles will be equipped with the latest braking, signaling, control, communication and safety systems. The diversity of car types will provide greater flexibility and high capacity to transport different sizes of goods, such as the transport of bulk cargo containers such as petrochemicals, crude steel and its products, limestone, cement, building materials, industrial and domestic waste, aluminium, food commodities and general cargo , in addition to the frequency of the schedule in transport. This will reduce shipping costs by 30%.
