Qatar launches first global cloud data center to achieve economic diversification

Qatar launched the first large-scale global cloud data center region on Wednesday night, which is Microsoft’s 55th region in the world.

The new Microsoft Cloud data center zone contributes to boosting the growth of the local economy and supports Qatar’s efforts to achieve economic diversification, nurture talent and attract foreign investment.

In a ceremony held under the title “Qatar’s Digital Journey to the Future”, the Qatari Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Muhammad Ali Al-Mannai, said that the launch of the centers today is an important milestone in the process of transform the state. from Qatar to an advanced and pioneering digital center in the Middle East and the world. The march is his map of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to establish a diversified and competitive national economy.

Al-Mannai revealed the launch of another global cloud data center in Qatar in the near future, to join the group of cloud computing development projects and to be an opportunity for companies in the State of Qatar to grow and expand in the country and the region, and for private and government entities to better provide their services, in a highly flexible environment operationally and secured with the best tools and practices to provide the necessary protection against cyber risks.

The Minister pointed to the issuance of the Act on Protected Data, which is currently under preparation, to form a qualitative addition to the set of laws and legislation that regulates the digital sector, contributing to the promotion of its development.

Al-Mannai explained that Qatar is less than 3 months away from the start of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, and “we are proud of our confirmation of the readiness of the telecommunications infrastructure, information technology and digital services to host the first tournament serve. the Middle East, and to provide an unforgettable experience on all levels.”

Latifa bint Khalid Al Thani, Executive Director of the Government Sector at Microsoft Qatar, confirmed that the launch of the first global cloud centers in the country is driving digital transformation and strengthening Qatar’s position as a leading country and a global center for innovation.

With the launch of the Microsoft Cloud Data Center Zone, local and global companies of all sizes and in various sectors will be able to host their cloud data in Qatar, benefiting from reliability and high performance. Hybrid cloud in a secure and advanced cloud environment, in addition to the ability to use Microsoft 365 for the global productivity cloud that delivers the best productivity applications seamlessly through cloud services.

In a press conference held before the launch of the cloud data centers, the list of tasks of the Assistant Undersecretary for Information Technology Affairs at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Mashael Ali Al Hammadi, said that the Microsoft Cloud Data Centers region in Qatar empower companies of all sizes and in all sectors, by providing them with the necessary infrastructure to accelerate innovation and economic diversification, which is a long-term investment that gives Qatar’s digital economy a competitive advantage, and confidence in Qatar’s position among the digitally leading countries in the Middle East, Africa and the world.

She pointed out that the cloud data centers will be an approved platform for cloud computing services for companies and institutions from the public and private sectors in Qatar and the world.

For his part, General Manager of Microsoft in Qatar, Lana Khalaf, said during the press conference that cloud data centers will support the economy and add more than $18 billion to the Qatari economy, and 36,000 new jobs over the next five years.

She pointed out that the Microsoft cloud is the largest secure cloud in the world and is investing $20 billion in cybersecurity over the next five years.

In 2021, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology developed the Qatar Smart Program “Tasmu” platform on the Azure cloud in cooperation with an alliance of global technology companies led by “Urid” company, in which Microsoft plays a major role, a platform which is considered a unique smart city solution, in the implementation of its commitment Supporting Qatar’s digital transformation agenda.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy chose the Tasmu platform to take advantage of the technical services it provides, such as digital twin and intelligent data analysis to manage transport operations and manage entire supporters for the World Cup 2022 World Cup.
