I saw first mums in a bowl on a neighbor’s doorstep a few days ago.
This scene – that first “trigger” that happens every year – ushers in the annual week of anxiety and grief that my entire family dreads. This is the week approaching the anniversary of 9/11, the day our older brother Danny was killed in 89The’ South tower floor.
Danny was 40, the older brother of Marty, Tom, me and Mike. He was the eldest son of Dan Sr. and Connie, Peggy’s husband and the father of their five young children.
Like my family, I’m sure the thousands of other 9/11 families had their motives.
I spoke to Danny shortly before the second plane crash. Like the other 2,977 souls killed that day, he would give anything to get out of those buildings and home to his family. I know this because it was one of the last things he said to me.
I hope our government will do something to help Danny and the other survivors and their families get justice and accountability for the past 21 years.
Every president, from George W. Bush to even Donald Trump, has done everything in their power to prevent the victims and families of 9/11 from obtaining justice and accountability. Trump invited members of my group, 9/11 Justice, to the White House on September 11, 2019. He looked them in the eye, shook hands and promised to declassify FBI documents related to the 9/11 attacks. 24 Then U.S. Attorney General Bill Burr asked for state secrets to be privileged, preventing those documents from seeing the light of day. It was the first time that the right to state secrets was decided in a civil suit.
Mike Kelly:Finally, Trump and LIV Golf shined the spotlight on Saudi relations on 9/11 – for now
Thanks to President Joe Biden’s September 2021 executive order declassifying some FBI documents, we now know that twelve officials at a Saudi government agency aided the Los Angeles hijackers. Without these ‘facilitators’, ‘there was no chance of 9/11’. Those are the words of the FBI, not mine.
Why did we have to fight for so long?
However, our struggle continues.
9/11 families have had to grow thicker skins over the past 21 years. This thick leather was tested again last summer with the launch of the LIV Golf. This new golf tournament is financed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which pays some golfers $100 million to join the tour. In July, Trump hosted a tournament at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey — 50 miles from Ground Zero in the state where 750 people died. When asked about the Saudi atrocities implicated in 9/11 and helping the Saudis get rid of this fact, many golfers said they were just trying to provide for their families.
Our brother Danny and 2,976 others were just trying to support their families, even on that fateful day.
During that golf tournament, when interviewed by ESPN, Trump said, “Well, nobody got to the bottom of 9/11.” He knows more than anyone else about the Saudi government’s involvement in 9/11. He blamed them on Fox & Friends while running for president in 2016.
The ruthlessness and cruelty of these golfers and the former president goes beyond shock and pain. The former president will host other Saudi-backed tournaments at clubs in Miami and the Bronx – closer to Ground Zero than Manchester!
If American golfers and the former president won’t stand up for the 9/11 families and their fight for justice and accountability, I hope they at least stand up for their countrymen who have to decide whether to step in. centsThe’ Earth or burn alive. Or to their brothers on board the hijacked planes, who had to call their loved ones to say their last goodbyes. defended them. We were all attacked on September 11th.
Saudi Arabia is an “ally” and a “strategic partner” of the United States. We know they were responsible for the murder of 3,000 innocent Americans, the murder of our Navy personnel in Pensacola, Florida, the murder of 15-year-old Fallon Smart in Portland Oregon, and the murder and dismemberment of a Washington Post reporter. They were not held accountable for any of these crimes. No American “ally” or “strategic partner” should have a tendency to kill innocent Americans and not be held accountable, just because they own oil and buy weapons.
I am a member of 9/11 was right. We represent a grassroots movement made up of the 9/11 community. This 9/11 community successfully worked with Congress to override a presidential veto of the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act. Now the law, JASTA denied immunity to terrorist states. We continue to educate the public, golf professionals and politicians, current and former, about the Saudi government’s role on 9/11.
We are grateful to Biden for keeping his campaign promise to declassify the 9/11 documents. With Biden’s continued support, he has the opportunity to finally help us get justice and become the hero the 9/11 community has been waiting for all these years.
Dennis McGinley, a member of 9/11 Justice, is the brother of Daniel F. McGinley, who was killed in 89The’ South tower floor. He lives in Haworth, New Jersey.
