Winter comes with many justified fears, in light of the Corona virus turning into more violent versions and the emergence of a deadly flu strain called H3N2.
Magdy Badran, a member of the Egyptian Society of Allergy and Immunology, spoke in detail to “Al-Ain News” about the latest mutations of the “Covid-19” virus and its virulence, the groups at risk and the signs that the infection.
He also spoke about the emergence of new variables and said that “the world is steps away from the emergence of new mutations of the Corona epidemic that may appear in the coming weeks.”
The Egyptian specialist revealed the secrets of autumn and winter diseases and how to prevent them and strengthen immunity, and to the text of the dialogue:
What are the latest mutations of the Corona virus?
We now have the “immunity-enigmatic” Corona XBB mutant, the worst genetic version of the Corona virus to date, and it appeared in August 2022, and several countries have an increase in the number of infections 3 weeks after start monitoring its discovery.
XBB is a sub-mutant of the supervised omicron, which is highly infectious and spreads, but its virulence is not yet clear, and there is no evidence that it causes more severe symptoms than previous mutants of the virus.
Is the XBB mutant a new threat?
XBB is a combination of the BA.2.10.1 and BA.2.75 omicron mutant, and of course may pose a new threat to global public health, and what scientists have found so far is highly immune evasive.
What makes it even more difficult for the immune systems to recognize is that it contains at least 7 mutations, thus escaping the immune antibodies.
So far, an increase in Corona cases has been detected in more than 17 countries due to infection with the XBB mutant, and it is believed to be more transmissible than other strains.
Who is likely to have the XBB mutation?
There are some groups most vulnerable to infection with the latest versions of Corona, in addition to those who have not received the “Covid-19” vaccine, followed by those who have not previously been infected with any copies of the virus not. , as well as those infected with the previous mutant of the Omicron variant, and especially this category had a higher risk of infection after 3 months of recovery from infection.
Are the symptoms of infection with XBB different from other versions of the Corona virus?
The vast majority of patients report mild symptoms when infected with the XBB mutant, especially in the case of those who received the corona vaccine.
In general, the main symptoms of an XBB mutation include:
– Sore throat
Dry and persistent cough
– short of breath
closed or runny nose
Is it expected to increase Corona injuries with the arrival of winter?
Of course, first of all, the world is steps away from the emergence of new mutations of the Corona epidemic, and they may appear in the coming weeks after the warm weather subsides and the summer season ends.
The number of new infections with the coronavirus is expected to rise rapidly with the onset of cold weather, and a return to increased mingling and gatherings indoors.
The main possible reasons for the increase in the number of infections with the Corona virus are the following:
1- Low levels of societal immunity due to not being vaccinated against corona, either with basic or booster doses.
2- The emergence of new virus mutations that are expected to be more widespread and may be more resistant to immunity acquired from vaccines or previous infection with corona mutations.
3- Low temperatures at the onset of winter, as the cold increases the periods of virus survival on surfaces.
4- Decreased immunity with increasing cold weather, especially in the elderly, asthma, smokers and people with chronic diseases who neglect treatment.
5- Not vaccinated against the influenza virus, and it is known that it has a tendency to increase the complications of corona and create the atmosphere for pneumonia, so vaccination against influenza changes the course of corona.
6- Neglecting preventive measures, especially wearing a mask and applying social distancing.
What are the most famous autumn and winter respiratory diseases?
There are many respiratory diseases that spread during the fall and winter, and it is important to know them and understand the reasons for their spread in order to prevent or peacefully coexist with them, including:
1- common cold
This is the most common disease, and it infects the upper part of the respiratory system with one of the cold viruses, which number about two hundred.
And the rates of colds are higher in children, and they are infected with the virus several times, especially while going to school.
One of the most common and serious infectious diseases, it spreads in autumn and winter, infecting 5%-15% of people annually, and ways of infection with influenza viruses include sneezing, coughing and contact or hand contact.
3- Allergic diseases
These include: chest allergy, allergic rhinitis, eye allergy, skin allergy and dry skin.
4- Dry eyes.
5- Sinus infections.
6- Otitis media.
7- Respiratory infections.
8- Sleep disorders.
Where it is common in autumn, although the night hours are longer, and without good sleep you can be exposed to excessive stress, mood swings, weight gain, heart disease and low immunity.
How to prevent autumn and winter diseases?
Autumn and winter diseases can be prevented by following the following:
Vaccination against flu and coronaviruses.
Drink plenty of fluids, humidify the air and use saline nasal rinses.
Keep trash cans clean, avoid drying clothes in rooms, and repair cracks on walls to ceilings to prevent water leakage and fungal growth.
Combating the indiscriminate consumption of medicines, especially antibiotics, specifically for patients with chest allergies.
Good indoor ventilation, as it protects allergy sufferers from crises.
Avoid using air conditioning, especially the center, and open windows for ventilation 3 times a day.
Take into account the application of the necessary preventive measures to prevent respiratory viruses.
Wash hands with soap and water or sterilize them well, especially before touching the nose, mouth and eyes, and physically distance yourself from others.
Wearing a mask is a necessity, especially when entering crowded places, exposure to polluted air, or handling patients with respiratory infections.
Good heating when the air temperature drops, and bed rest when sick.
Avoid sharing personal items such as food or drink, towels and napkins.
Get enough sleep.
– Compliance with allergy treatment, as patients with chest allergies are more susceptible to flu complications.
– Good nutrition, and attention to the acquisition of vitamins: (C) the antioxidant that increases immunity, (A) to increase the immunity of the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, (D) to increase the efficiency of the immune system.
It is desirable to drink water, warm liquids and natural herbs sweetened with bee honey.
Do moderate exercise daily for half an hour, taking into account drinking plenty of water during that time.
