Engineer Adel Basbous

The Netherlands course marked an important turning point in my professional life… It shifted my interest from the technical and engineering aspects of housing to the planning and evaluation aspects of the sector as a whole… I got Ing. Meet Youssef Hiasat, Director. General of the Housing Corporation on my return from Rotterdam… I explained to him the content of the course and what I gained from it, so he showed His great admiration for it… and I have a comprehensive report on my participation to the extent of six pages… He highly praised it and requested that it be circulated to all the Foundation’s employees and that a copy of it be kept in his library…

In those days, the National Housing Strategy was recently approved by the Council of Ministers, and the Housing Corporation was assigned to follow up its implementation. For this purpose, a specialized administrative unit was established under the name “Housing Planning Directorate”. … The director of the Corporation found that the knowledge gained during the course in the Netherlands fits perfectly. With the tasks and objectives of the new board… I was transferred directly there…

After returning from travel, I continued to complete and prepare my new house… Only three months passed until we were in our own house, which is only two hundred meters from the family’s house… A spacious house with two bedrooms, a salon, a living room, two bathrooms and a kitchen compared to the only room we lived in. For many years… my father planted olive trees, grapes and one fig tree in the garden of the house… a big qualitative leap… I made everyone happy, especially my wife, who never complained that she in one room with mother-in-law and was not among the family… I made my four children happy, who after one year five after the arrival of the youngest Basil…

My conditions in the institution improved, as I was quickly promoted to the head of the department… The good things of chance wished that a grant from USAID included the establishment of a GIS system in the institution, which one of the main areas is I practiced in the Netherlands… So a unit was established for this. The purpose is under my supervision… I have been sent to the United States of America to participate in an international conference and to join an advanced training course in this field. ..

My trip to America lasted three weeks, during which I visited New York, Washington and Los Angeles, and participated in a conference in Palm Springs, California, for users of geographic information systems… There I met a Jordanian who was operating in Las Vegas. by his American wife of Jordanian origin… At the end of the conference and before leaving for Washington, they both insisted that I accompany them to Las Vegas and stay in their hospitality for two or three days… I liked the idea , but I was very hesitant… How could I go with a couple I’ve only known for two days… What inconvenience would I cause them and what embarrassment would I put myself in… However, the kindness, spontaneity and gentleness they showed encouraged me to accept this generous offer…
Strange is the estrangement….let one of us celebrate the arrival of the people of his country…and invite him to his house and honor him with the greatest generosity…not for previous acquaintance, nor for kinship or kinship , nor for intellectual or ideological harmony … but because it has something of the smell of the fatherland …. Some of its features or characteristics … Or because with its presence we evoke family and loved ones .. .And beautiful moments we lived together…

The three of us left California by car for the desert state of Nevada… We finally arrived in Las Vegas, the city of gambling… Where slot machines are everywhere as well as in hotel halls and fun houses… I wandered around the beautiful city and I noticed the presence of many mosques and places of worship there are not far from the gambling halls and gambling halls…

I had so much fun staying with this wonderful couple… They drove me to the airport after bringing me gifts for relatives in Amman… and I left for Washington… I stayed there for two days . bumps and tremors… The plane finally landed at JFK. .. I waited for the passengers bags to arrive… I waited a long time and my bag didn’t arrive… So I was told that it might arrive on The next flight an hour later… I waited in vain… Oh God, the bag was lost… The things and the luggage in it were lost… What can I say to those who gave me their gifts… They showered me with their kindness and great generosity.. I left for the hotel worried I hit one fifth with one sixth… after leaving my address with the concerned people at the airport…

I waited in the hotel for the bag to arrive but it didn’t arrive… It was dark… I couldn’t sleep despite my continuous efforts until dawn was about to break.. . Then my eyes fell asleep, tired and anxious… I only fell asleep for an hour or so… I was awakened by the sound of a knock on the door of the room… I opened the door to see a huge black skinned person who quickly threw the suitcase on the floor and left… I fell asleep again for an hour or two and then I woke up.. .so I prepared myself to leave for the airport back to Amman…

I resumed my work in the institution after returning from the trip with much enthusiasm and passion. As the days passed, I began to draw attention to the extensive and excellent performance, especially during the annual symposium to evaluate the housing sector, which I was overseeing its preparation and preparation for… In return for that I got all the appreciation and encouragement from the director of the institution, Ing. Soon he elevated me to the rank of directorate director… to manage the housing sector assessment directorate, which had two divisions with many employees…

In 1998, the Housing Corporation offered a training workshop on urban and housing indicators for representatives of the countries of the Arab region, held by the Regional Training Center for Human Settlements under the auspices of the League of Arab States… I had a core point and effective contribution to the success of this workshop … which has been confirmed and praised by books An official letter addressed to the Foundation by the United Nations Center for Human Settlements and the Arab Villages Organization.

I was about to return to the Netherlands again…. The Institute for Housing Studies, where I stayed five months ago, announced the availability of a scholarship to do a master’s degree in urban management in collaboration with a Dutch university…. Initially I was very interested in the idea… It is an opportunity to complete postgraduate studies in an important and vital subject… However, the idea of my family at that stage and for ‘ leaving a period of sixteen months formed a disturbing nightmare for me that left me a prey to hesitation and confusion for several days before I decided to study and travel, so the response and apology came quickly because of my age Forty… in a few weeks…

In early 1998, the government launched what was known as the Social Security Package, which is an integrated program to combat poverty and unemployment that includes four sub-programmes, one of which is the infrastructure development project in poor areas, which includes dozens of projects . and activities aimed at developing basic services in refugee camps and slums at a cost of more than ninety million dinars. By many government agencies, especially the Housing Corporation in which I work… The subject did not arouse any interest in me. .. It was far from the field I was working in….

During the month of August, an announcement in English in the local newspapers of the UNDP office in Amman came to my attention regarding the availability of a vacancy for a development program coordinator… A telephone call from the UNDP program inviting me to ‘ a written exam… I arrived at the program offices to find seven others who were also invited to take this exam out of the total number of applicants of (66) people… We were in various rooms on remote computers sat… The duration of the exam was two hours and each of us had to answer the questions placed in front of him on the device in English… I did not have much difficulty in taking the exam, since most of the questions are related to issues I was familiar with many of through the Rotterdam course several years ago… My impression was To do the exam somewhat well… But I was not very optimistic about this…

Another three weeks passed after which I was invited for a personal interview with the people involved in the program….three others who took the exam were also invited…the interview was difficult and difficult…so many questions was asked …I was not at all satisfied with my performance … and I thought that the opportunity had completely disappeared … Later it became clear to me that this belief contained a lot of illusion and pessimism … I am informed by phone in early November that I was selected for this position at a salary slightly less than three times the salary I was. I ask this from the housing authority at that time…
