Genevieve Simard and Marc Valley began their life together in a tiny 350 square foot apartment in Griffintown, which was supposed to serve as the businessman’s base. They lived there for two and a half years, until in September 2018 they moved into a spacious 1032 square feet apartment, which perfectly suited their needs.

Their early days as a married couple taught them two things: They loved Griffintown… and they wouldn’t have much closet space. As they wandered into the sales offices of the bustling district, they were seduced by the Bassin du Havre, on the edge of the Lachine Canal.

“We were looking for flexibility to adapt plans,” explains Mark Valley. After living in a small apartment for two and a half years, we had very specific ideas about what to do and what not to do. »

“I decorate a lot of apartments, and what strikes me about the neighborhood is the lack of storage space,” says interior designer Genevieve Simard. We didn’t want to lose a square inch. We didn’t want a corner that couldn’t be used. We spent many Friday evenings with a bottle of wine and making plans. We wanted all our stuff to fit well everywhere, so it wouldn’t be overcrowded. »

They are especially proud of a clean living room that nevertheless remains warm. Two large wooden panels on either side of the TV. To achieve this effect, the corner for the washer and dryer was canceled as well as the small hallway leading to it to expand the second bedroom behind the wall.

Mark Vallée explains: “The cabinet maker made the entire wall, where the TV is installed and all the cables are hidden. There are two types of boards. Behind the first, next to the taillight strip, is our glassware. When you hit the other panel, you enter Geneva’s office. Storage is integrated at the bottom of the TV. There are drawers that double as filing cabinets, not just shelves. We both work, we have a lot of paperwork to put away. »

Against this wall, a library was designed to house the owner’s comic book collection and some interesting visuals. Other file drawers are integrated.

The master bedroom is also allocated.

He continues, “We expanded the wardrobe and put the doors in a shiny navy blue, which is really shiny.” The bed is also made specifically for the room, with sockets to charge your phone or tablet.

What about the washer and dryer? They are strategically placed in the hidden room. Stacked, hidden behind a sliding door, next to a wardrobe-turned-cellar, it holds 555 bottles.

This room also serves as an office and guest bedroom. Both cushions from BoConcept convert into one bed. When glued together, it is a bit larger than a double bed. “My desk is on wheels, and I can easily move it around,” explains Genevieve Simard. When our friends come to bed, they have plenty of room to sleep. I call it a four-in-one piece. »

They live on the seventh floor of the third (and penultimate) stage of the Bassins du Havre, which is called Signature, and is much more luxurious. They chose to have a view of the very quiet courtyard, rather than the Lachine Canal, to enjoy the late afternoon sun on their very spacious balcony.

Four years later, Mark Valley has redirected his career and works a lot from home. He also needs a desk. Both snow lovers, they will settle in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. They will (of course) adapt their next apartment, while not wanting to repeat what has been done. “The apartment in Griffintown will remain one of its kind,” they assured. Many pieces of furniture are custom made, and they will move out, leaving almost everything to future owners.
