Abu Dhabi Center for Shelter and Humanitarian Care – Ewaa, established in 2008 to provide care, rehabilitation and empowerment to victims of human trafficking in the UAE, expanded its tasks by the year 2020 to follow and include the Department of Community Development several cases of violence and abuse in Abu Dhabi, providing integrated services for the categories of domestic violence, violence against children and human trafficking and some human affairs. Its services include: reporting, referral, provision of support and social rehabilitation, individual and group psychological support, behavior change, counselling, legal support and empowerment, holding family counseling sessions, social services, provision of temporary shelter that meets basic and immediate needs if necessary. , preparation and participation in studies, research and questionnaires On violence, abuse and human trafficking, providing community and institutional contributions to cases and their management.
Regarding the progress of work in the center and the services it provides, Suad Saeed Al-Zadjali, head of the Shelter and Care Department, said that the “shelter” of the center, and as it acquired new powers, various facilities have been added. this, as two new shelters were opened, bringing the total number to 3. This role. From the centre’s zeal to provide the highest levels of service for cases, various facilities have been developed, including: in-patient clinics, special rooms for mothers with their children, rooms for direct reception of cases, classrooms for students, children’s playrooms, an activity hall , and rooms for resident supervisors throughout the week.

Children’s shelter
The children’s shelter, which Al-Ittihad toured, contains special rooms in which children engage in various activities, in addition to study rooms, rooms for mothers, an equipped kitchen, rooms for babysitters, places for children of determination, and an outdoor patio for holding daily events and activities In addition to organizing foreign trips. The center is keen to collaborate with educators and experts to help children living in shelters to continue their education by organizing cultural programs such as reading, writing and handicraft activities, human development programs and art therapy to achieve psychological balance , build and correct personality. behavior.

Regarding the types of violence cases the center receives, Al-Zadjali said that most types of violence cases are domestic violence, and the center also includes neglected children, human trafficking and humanitarian care.

She added: The staff evaluates the case when they enter the shelter, and determines whether it suffers from psychological or medical problems, symptoms that require treatment, or emergency intervention, which must be contained and accommodated with high professionalism, in order to build mutual trust between the two build parties. .

Regarding the duration of stay in shelters, Al-Zadjali indicated that this is done according to the evaluation of each case, and the extent of his response to care, rehabilitation and empowerment programs, especially in the context of domestic violence. The period varies from one person to another, and there are cases that can take 6 months or more. As for the most difficult category that can be dealt with, it is represented in the category of adolescent girls, given the hormonal change and the psychological state that the girl goes through at this stage. Al-Zadjali presented a message to the audience and said: My message to the young man and woman when they form a family is that they have a high sense of responsibility so that children are not the victims, stressing that the child has the right to education, health, play, love, safety and stability, adding that the stability of society begins with the formation of a stable family. , safe and valid. Regarding the care provided to children while they are in the shelter, she said: There has been constant communication with the parents by phone, and we are keen to arrange visits for the two parties because there is a rapprochement between they, and we are also looking for second degree families such as grandfather, grandmother, uncle, aunt, uncle and aunt, to achieve safety and psychological stability for the child.

Suad Al-Zadjali reported that according to a daily schedule, children go to schools in the morning in a car equipped with male and female supervisors, and they are followed up by qualified specialists. After returning from school, they eat lunch, then sleep, after which the homework stage begins under the supervision of teachers. After the break, they eat dinner and go to bed. Weekends vary with the aim of breaking the routine and taking advantage of the activities held at the centre, especially foreign trips. Girls also benefit from cooking workshops within “My Little Kitchen.”

Psychological help
Maryam Al-Rashdi, an assistant psychologist at the Ewaa Center, is responsible for providing psychological support for cases including domestic violence and human trafficking. She also works on psychological evaluation according to weekly support sessions and workshops, in order to achieve social integration .
