Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – A new study has found that sending children to school, rather than staying at home and resting, may be a better way to help them recover more quickly from a concussion recovery.
The study, published Friday in JAMA Network Open, found that an earlier return to school was associated with better outcomes for some children.
The study reviewed data on 1,630 children ages 5 to 18 who went to nine different emergency rooms across Canada. And she found that for children ages 8 to 18 who were recovering from a concussion, their early return to school, in two days or less, was associated with milder symptoms for children 14 days after their injury. This was not the case for children between the ages of 5 and 7.
Patients who followed recommendations for a slower return to school activity, such as not being sent to school and not using electronic devices, took longer to recover and had more symptoms an average of 10 days after infection than those who did not did not follow these steps.
Previous studies have shown that prolonged restraint after a concussion increases a child’s risk of depression and anxiety. The researchers believe that social relationships alleviate stress caused by longing for school, and that returning to a normal sleep and school schedule may play a role in helping children recover more quickly. Light to moderate physical activities also help the child recover faster.
Dr. Chris Vaughan, author of the study, said that about a decade ago, doctors encouraged parents to rest their children and limit their brain activity, with the goal of helping them recover for a longer period of time.
“We didn’t have good data on this,” said Vaughan, a neuropsychologist at Children’s Hospital. “But it seemed like the thing we were supposed to be doing, because we were helping kids avoid the activities that were causing the symptoms, we were doing our best to control.” about the symptoms, until it became a sort of standard of treatment.”
But, according to Vaughan, there has been a shift in the last five or six years, and the thinking is that after the first day or two of rest, some activity might be good for recovery.
“We still take concussions very seriously,” he added.
“In the past, we’ve done what many people call cocoon therapy, where you first put your baby in a dark room and limit the use of stimulation,” says Dr. “And let him rest. But what we” I learned is that isolating the children to this extent slowed the process of concussion recovery.”
The pendulum has returned to where the doctors are trying to encourage the children to keep participating as much as possible, and to send them to school as soon as possible.
“For families, the most important thing is to avoid any kind of activity where the child might hit their head again while they’re recovering, but it’s important to move, not just sit,” Briskin said.
She pointed out that the study complements what some doctors are already doing, explaining, “But maybe this is the closest return (to normal life) that we’ve seen to be beneficial.” According to Briskin, children often miss about a week of school due to concussions.
“Based on this study, that would actually be detrimental to their course of recovery,” Briskin said.
Help children with concussions
Most children who have had a concussion will feel better within two weeks, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but for some, symptoms can last for a month or longer.
Doctors pointed out that just because they suffer from some symptoms does not mean that they should remain in isolation, but that children may need accommodation. Briskin explained that children are often sensitive to light and noise after a concussion, and thinking and concentrating can make them feel worse.
“We try as much as possible to lighten the load by having kids take breaks from class if they have to go out,” Briskin said. “We have people who wear sunglasses if they are sensitive to light. If they are sensitive to noise, we try to keep them away from noisy environments.” Like a music class, or even a dining or hall.
In the study, the association between early return to school and fewer concussion symptoms was stronger for those who reported having a greater number of symptoms. and start Typical symptoms include dizziness, headache and nausea.
Most guidelines recommend that people who have had a concussion get a day or two of physical and mental rest, then gradually return to normal activities with some accommodations and support.
And for Dr. Brett Marcusen, a sports medicine physician who works with teams at the University of Iowa who was not involved in the study, it’s hard to see why it’s different for younger kids, the study found.
“It can be difficult for them to fill out checklists and identify how they feel,” Markussen continued.
But in general, there are things people can do to help children, or anyone for that matter, recover from a concussion: First, people need to be protected from re-injury or from activities that could further damage their head. They need to get a good night’s sleep, Vaughan said, and also eat good water and food. They should get some exercise, like going for a walk.
